Winter breaks in Devon
A Devon Winter Break Around Fire & Cold Water
Hole Mill is at its best in winter — log-burning stove crackling, wood-fired hot tub steaming on the back lawn, cold pond for the brave, and a hidden Branscombe valley that's empty of crowds. Sleeps 12+, off-peak 3-night minimum.
Devon in winter is the secret season. The coast path empties out, the village pubs settle into their proper rhythm, the Jurassic Coast cliffs are dramatic in low sun, and Branscombe Beach often has only dog-walkers on it. Hole Mill is built for it — the log-burning stove takes the chill off the dining hall in fifteen minutes, the wood-fired hot tub is at its best when there's frost on the lawn, and the cold pond is genuinely cold (5–8 °C from December to March) for the swimmers who want it.
Most of our winter bookings are extended families settling in for a long weekend, friend groups doing milestone birthdays, or cold-water swimmers and yoga teachers running off-season retreats. Off-peak (anything outside Christmas, New Year and February half-term) starts at a 3-night minimum.
Log-burning stove
A proper wood-burner in the main lounge with seasoned logs supplied. Underfloor heating throughout the dining hall and bathrooms.
Wood-fired hot tub
Best in winter. Lit on request — 2 hours from cold to a comfortable 38 °C, with firewood and kindling stocked for top-ups.
Cold pond, 5–8 °C
The 3 m-deep organic swimming pond is at its coldest December–March. Genuine cold-water immersion right outside the back door.
Built for reading days
Deep sofas, two lounges, a games room, a dressing-up box and a games cupboard. Wood-burner, blanket store, kettle. Starlink for the streaming evenings.
Empty winter beaches
Branscombe Beach (1 mile away) is often deserted in winter. Coast-path walks to Beer and Sidmouth are spectacular in low sun.
Dark skies
Hole Mill sits in a hidden valley with almost no light pollution. Clear winter nights show the Milky Way over the hot tub.
Christmas & New Year
Holiday weeks book up first
Christmas and New Year are our most-asked-about weeks every year — they usually go to repeat guests and to families booking 12+ months in advance. A 7-night minimum applies. We dress the property for the season (real tree, candles, a wreath on the mill door); guests provide the rest of the magic. See our dedicated /christmas-at-hole-mill guide. If your dates are still open on the calendar at /availability they're genuinely available.

Hot/cold contrast on tap
Cold pond → wood-fired tub → cold pond
Winter is when the contrast loop really sings. Plunge into the 5 °C pond, sprint to the steaming hot tub, soak for ten minutes, do it again. The two are 30 metres apart on the same lawn. Most guests get hooked by day two. If you've never done it, the host is happy to walk you through the safety basics on arrival.

Mid-week winter breaks from 3 nights
Off-peak (anything outside school holidays, summer, Christmas and New Year) starts at a 3-night minimum. November, January and February tend to have the best mid-week availability — the property is full at weekends most of the year. Last-minute breaks within the next 6 weeks often appear on the /offers page.

From recent stays

“The property was in a quiet valley where we could walk in shade on a hot Bank Holiday weekend. The pond had newts and dragonflies and was a wonderful place for the children to see nature. All the amenities were first class, kitchen, dining area, lounge, games room, bedrooms and bathrooms and gave our large extended family space to have fun.”

“For three years running, our group of friends—held together loosely by a shared enthusiasm for getting in the water—has stayed at Hole Mill. It’s simply the nicest place, ever. We’ll be back. It seems only sensible”

Common questions
Frequently asked
How well-heated is Hole Mill in winter?+
Hole Mill is fully insulated and centrally heated throughout, with underfloor heating in the dining hall and most bathrooms, plus a working log-burning stove in the main lounge. Even in mid-January the house is genuinely warm — most guests find they have the thermostat lower than at home.
Can we cold-water swim in the pond in winter?+
Yes — the pond is open every day of the year. Winter temperatures run 5–8 °C from December to March. Dedicated cold-water swimmers love it; first-timers should swim with a buddy, keep dips short (1–3 minutes), and warm up immediately afterwards. The wood-fired hot tub 30 m away makes this easy.
Do you take Christmas and New Year bookings?+
Yes — Christmas and New Year are popular weeks at Hole Mill (7-night minimum). They typically book 6–12 months ahead and often go to returning guests. If the dates are visible on /availability they're genuinely open.
Are the village pubs open in winter?+
Yes — the Mason's Arms (10 min walk) is open year-round and the Fountain Head pub is a 3-minute drive. The Sea Shanty café on the beach reduces its hours November–February but is usually open Friday–Sunday for lunch. Hole Mill itself stocks a starter set of provisions for arrival days.
What's the minimum stay for a winter break?+
Off-peak is 3 nights — meaning anything outside UK school holidays, summer (July/August), Christmas and New Year. Most of November, January (after the 7th) and February are 3-night-minimum periods, with some availability for shorter last-minute stays on /offers.
