Dog-friendly cottages in Devon

A Dog-Friendly Devon Cottage — Built for Muddy Paws

Hole Mill is a properly dog-friendly Devon cottage in Branscombe — 2 private acres of secured garden, direct footpath access to Branscombe Beach and the South West Coast Path, and up to 3 dogs welcome free of charge.

Most cottage listings say "dog-friendly". We're built for it. The grounds are secured by mature hedgerows, the floors are mostly slate and oak (no carpets in the high-traffic areas), there's an outdoor tap for muddy rinses, and the back door opens straight into a footpath system that runs all the way to Branscombe Beach via the South West Coast Path. Up to three dogs welcome at no extra charge.

We also live with dogs ourselves, so we know what makes a stay actually work — proper towels, sensible flooring, somewhere to dry a wet collie, and walks where you don't have to drive anywhere to start them.

Up to 3 dogs welcome

No extra charge. We just ask that dogs don't go in the swimming pond (to protect the ecosystem) and stay out of the bedrooms.

Two secured acres

Mature hedgerows enclose the whole garden — letting dogs out without a lead is rarely an issue here. There's woodland, a stream and wildflower meadows to explore.

Coast Path from the door

A footpath at the bottom of the garden links to the South West Coast Path. Walk to Branscombe Beach (1 mile), Beer (4 miles) or all the way to Sidmouth without a car.

Dog-friendly Branscombe Beach

Branscombe Beach is dog-friendly year-round (no summer restrictions). Pebble at the top, sand at low tide. The Sea Shanty café has water bowls outside.

Sensible floors & towels

Slate, oak and lime-washed stone in the main areas — no white wool carpets to worry about. Dog towels in the boot room; outdoor tap for paw rinses.

Dog-friendly pubs nearby

The Mason's Arms (10 min walk), the Fountain Head (3 min drive) and the Hare & Hounds at Sidford all welcome dogs throughout — including the dining rooms.

Coast Path walks at most Devon cottages need a 10-minute drive to a trailhead. At Hole Mill the path starts in the garden — through the back gate, past the stream, and within five minutes you're on the South West Coast Path. We've mapped seven local routes on /walks, from a 1 km amble to the village pub up to a 10 km coastal hike via Beer Head.

Dog-friendly Branscombe

A village where dogs are part of the deal

Branscombe is one of the few Devon villages where the beach has no summer dog ban. The Mason's Arms (a 10-minute walk down the lane) is dog-friendly throughout, including the restaurant. The Sea Shanty at the beach hands out water bowls. The Forge tearoom and the Old Bakery National Trust shop both welcome dogs. We can recommend the Hare & Hounds at Sidford for a proper Sunday roast where the dog gets a sausage.

What guests say

From recent stays

The outdoor grounds. Children loved exploring the stream, the trampoline, the natural swimming pond and beautiful garden for playing. Beautiful peaceful surroundings.

The property was in a quiet valley where we could walk in shade on a hot Bank Holiday weekend. The pond had newts and dragonflies and was a wonderful place for the children to see nature. All the amenities were first class, kitchen, dining area, lounge, games room, bedrooms and bathrooms and gave our large extended family space to have fun.

For three years running, our group of friends—held together loosely by a shared enthusiasm for getting in the water—has stayed at Hole Mill. It’s simply the nicest place, ever. We’ll be back. It seems only sensible

Common questions

Frequently asked

How many dogs can I bring to Hole Mill?+

Up to 3 well-behaved dogs are welcome free of charge. If you'd like to bring more, please get in touch — we've hosted families with 4 in the past and it's usually fine.

Is there a dog charge?+

No — there is no extra charge for dogs at Hole Mill. We just ask you to bring their bed/towels and clean up after them in the garden.

Is the garden fully secure for dogs?+

Yes — the 2 acres are fully enclosed by mature hedgerows. Most dogs are off-lead within minutes of arrival. The stream and woodland inside the property line are safe; the bottom of the valley does meet a quiet footpath, so escape-artists may need closer supervision.

Is Branscombe Beach dog-friendly?+

Yes, year-round — Branscombe Beach has no summer dog ban. It's a roughly 1 mile walk from Hole Mill via the footpath system or the village. The South West Coast Path linking to Beer (east) and Sidmouth (west) is dog-friendly throughout.

Can my dog swim in the pond?+

Not in the organic swimming pond — it's a working ecosystem and dog hair, oils and sun cream all damage the natural filtration. There's a stream running through the property that's safe and shallow for paddling, plus dog-friendly Branscombe Beach 1 mile away.
