A Jurassic Coast Cottage — One Mile From the Beach

Hole Mill is a self-catering Devon cottage 1 mile from Branscombe Beach on the UNESCO Jurassic Coast. The South West Coast Path runs straight down our valley to a quiet pebble-and-sand beach. Sleeps 12+ across 5 ensuite bedrooms.

The UNESCO Jurassic Coast runs for 95 miles between Exmouth and Studland Bay. Branscombe is one of its quietest stretches — a National Trust-protected village with a thatched forge, a 14th-century bakery and a 6-mile pebble beach unbroken by groynes or development. Hole Mill sits in the wooded valley behind the village, 1 mile inland, with a footpath that links directly into the South West Coast Path.

Most Jurassic Coast cottages put you in the busier hubs — Lyme Regis, Sidmouth, Beer. We're the quiet middle: close enough to drive to Charmouth's fossil-hunting beaches and Lyme's Cobb harbour in half an hour, but with a stretch of coast path right outside the door that feels miles from anywhere.

Coast Path from the door

A footpath at the bottom of the garden joins the South West Coast Path. Walk to Branscombe Beach (1 mile), Beer (4 miles) or Sidmouth (7 miles) without a car.

Branscombe Beach

A quiet 6-mile stretch of pebble and sand, no resort buildings, a wood-fired beach sauna and the Sea Shanty café. Dog-friendly year-round.

Beer Head & smugglers' caves

A dramatic chalk-and-flint headland 4 miles east on the coast path — and Beer village beyond, with its smugglers' caves and working boats.

Fossil-hunting from Charmouth

30 minutes' drive to Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre, the easiest spot on the Jurassic Coast to find ammonites and belemnites with kids.

Lyme Regis & The Cobb

Half an hour east — Mary Anning's town, with the Cobb harbour, the fossil shop window displays and a brilliant museum.

Sea kayaking & rock pools

Branscombe and Beer beaches both have rock pools at low tide; sea kayak hire is available at Beer in summer, with guided trips around the limestone caves.

Walk to the beach, then walk further

Branscombe Beach is 1 mile from Hole Mill on foot — 25–30 minutes through the village or along the valley path. From there the South West Coast Path runs east through Beer Head to Beer (4 miles) and Seaton (6 miles), or west over Weston Mouth to Sidmouth (7 miles). All can be done as round trips with the bus, or as point-to-points with a return taxi.

Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre (the kid-friendly fossil-hunting beach) is 30 minutes by car. Lyme Regis with the Cobb harbour is the same. The Donkey Sanctuary at Sidmouth (free) is 20 minutes. Seaton Wetlands (wild beavers, RSPB birdlife) is 15 minutes. Most days you can leave Hole Mill after breakfast, do a fossil walk, eat lunch on a beach and be back in the hot tub by dusk.

Quieter than the postcards

Why Branscombe over Lyme Regis or Sidmouth

Lyme and Sidmouth are beautiful, but they're towns — busy in season, hard to park, expensive to eat in. Branscombe is a National Trust village with a 14th-century bakery, a working forge, three good pubs and a beach café — and a population well under 500. It's the Jurassic Coast at a Devon village pace.

The property was in a quiet valley where we could walk in shade on a hot Bank Holiday weekend. The pond had newts and dragonflies and was a wonderful place for the children to see nature. All the amenities were first class, kitchen, dining area, lounge, games room, bedrooms and bathrooms and gave our large extended family space to have fun.

For three years running, our group of friends—held together loosely by a shared enthusiasm for getting in the water—has stayed at Hole Mill. It’s simply the nicest place, ever. We’ll be back. It seems only sensible

Common questions

Frequently asked

How close is Hole Mill to Branscombe Beach?+

Hole Mill is roughly 1 mile from Branscombe Beach. It's a 4-minute drive, a 25–30 minute walk through the village, or a 30-minute coast-path descent. The beach has a wood-fired sauna and the highly-rated Sea Shanty café.

Where can we go fossil hunting?+

The easiest fossil-hunting spot for families is Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre, 30 minutes east. Lyme Regis just beyond is the home of Mary Anning. Closer to Hole Mill, Branscombe Beach has occasional belemnites and the cliffs behind Hooken Undercliff (a short walk east) are great for amateur geology.

Can we walk to Beer or Sidmouth on the South West Coast Path?+

Yes — both are coast-path walks straight from Hole Mill. Branscombe → Beer is ~4 miles each way (allow 2 hours one-way), passing Beer Head and the smugglers' caves. Branscombe → Sidmouth is ~7 miles each way via Weston Mouth, the most dramatic coastal section near us.

Can we get to the Jurassic Coast by train?+

Yes — Honiton (direct from London Waterloo, 3 hours) is 25 minutes by taxi from Hole Mill. From there the coast is best explored by car, but the local 899 bus runs Sidmouth–Branscombe–Beer–Seaton along the coast and is useful for point-to-point walks.
