If you are organising a hen party for ten to twelve and want somewhere properly memorable that isn't a Cotswolds Airbnb or a city centre apartment, East Devon is one of the most under-rated options in the country. The combination of a private cottage, a wood-fired hot tub, a beach sauna and a coast path you can fall onto from the front door is genuinely hard to beat. This is the practical guide.
Why East Devon for a hen weekend
The honest case for East Devon over the more obvious hen-party destinations:
- Privacy. A self-catering cottage with private grounds means no awkward proximity to other guests, no other tables in the dining room, no curfew. You make as much (or as little) noise as you want.
- Activities that aren't tacky. Beach saunas, kayaking, coastal walks, fossil hunting, dinner at a properly good gastropub — these are activities you would want to do whether or not it was a hen weekend.
- Scale. Most hen-party venues are either small (3-bedroom cottages that can't fit ten properly) or hotels (where you don't have control over the space). A 5-bedroom Devon farmhouse with private grounds is a much better fit for a group of 10-12.
- No driving once you arrive. From Hole Mill you can walk to the beach, the pub, the village and the coast path. You only need a car for getting to and from the cottage.
- Cost. Done properly, East Devon for a weekend is genuinely affordable per head — under £200 per person for two nights including accommodation and food at most times of year.
Why Hole Mill specifically
Hole Mill sleeps 12+ across 5 ensuite bedrooms and 4 bathrooms — the right size for the classic hen-party group. It also has the things that matter for a hen weekend specifically:
- Two private acres. No neighbours within earshot.
- A wood-fired hot tub. Large enough for 6-8 at once. Heated by a wood fire — needs lighting 90 minutes ahead, but the experience is genuinely lovely.
- A 3-metre deep organic swimming pond. Wild swimming on the doorstep, with a diving jetty.
- A big farmhouse kitchen. Twelve people can eat at the table at one time.
- Starlink broadband. Fast enough for everyone to be on it at once. (We mention this because the alternative — multiple weak 4G signals — is a real problem at most rural cottages.)
- Eight-plus parking spaces. Including an EV charger.
A two-night hen weekend itinerary
This is the rhythm we recommend. Adjust the activities to suit your group.
Friday evening
Arrive 4-6 pm. Settle in. Send the bride to the hot tub while the rest of the group sets up. Light the BBQ or order a takeaway pizza delivery from Bella Pizzeria in Beer (delivers to Hole Mill, decent pizza, ample for a group). Open prosecco. Spend the evening in.
A relaxed first evening is what makes the rest of the weekend work — most hen parties go too hard on the first night and pay for it on the Saturday.
Saturday morning
Coastal walk from Branscombe Mouth east to Beer (3 miles, easy pace, beautiful). See our Branscombe-to-Beer walk guide. Lunch at The Anchor Inn in Beer.
Walk or bus back. Most groups split at this point — the more energetic walk back, the more relaxed take the 899 bus back to Branscombe Cross.
Saturday afternoon (the activity slot)
Choose one of the following:
Option 1: Wood-fired beach sauna. Book a private session at the Jurassic Sauna at Branscombe Mouth (six-person hut, can be booked exclusively). Combine with a swim in the sea. See our Jurassic Sauna guide.
Option 2: Sea kayaking. Beer Boat Trips and several other operators run guided sea kayak tours along the coast (chalk cliffs, sea caves, hidden coves). 2-3 hours, suitable for beginners. Search "Beer kayaking Devon" for current operators.
Option 3: Fossil hunting at Charmouth. A different kind of hen-party day, but genuinely fun for groups. Book a guided fossil walk through the Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre. Brings out the competitive in everyone. See our fossil hunting guide.
Option 4: Wild swimming session. Hole Mill's organic pond is brilliant for groups. Suit up, jump in from the diving jetty, get out, get in the hot tub. Good cycle for a hen morning.
Option 5: A spa day at The Pig. Drive to The Pig at Combe (20 minutes) for an afternoon at the on-site spa. Book ahead.
Saturday evening
This is the centerpiece of the weekend. Two main options:
Option A: Cooked at home. Order in a private chef. The Pig at Combe runs a chef-at-home service in the area; several smaller local chefs do too — search "private chef East Devon" or "private chef Branscombe" for current operators. Allow £75-£120 per head for a three-course private dinner cooked in the Hole Mill kitchen. Genuinely lovely — you eat at your own table, on your own timing, with no driving home afterwards.
Option B: Eat out. Book a long table at The Mason's Arms in Branscombe (12 minutes' walk down the lane), or at The Pig at Combe (20 minutes by minibus). Both can accommodate 10-12. Book at least a month ahead for either.
After dinner, hot tub, fire pit, music. Hole Mill has a proper sound system, an outdoor fire pit, and the privacy to play music as late as you like.
Sunday morning
Slow start. Big breakfast at the cottage (someone needs to be on bacon duty). Optional second walk down to Branscombe Mouth, or a slow morning in the garden, or a Sunday roast at The Hare & Hounds before driving home.
Check-out 10 am.
Activities worth knowing about
Beyond the standard list, hen-party-friendly activities in the area include:
- Cocktail-making class at one of the local distilleries (Lyme Bay Winery in Axminster or Salcombe Gin in Salcombe — the latter is a longer drive but excellent).
- Wine tasting at Lyme Bay Winery (30 minutes' drive, good private group rates).
- Yoga session in the garden — local yoga teachers will come to Hole Mill for a private session. Excellent way to start a Saturday morning. Email us for current contacts.
- Boat trip out to Beer Head for the chalk cliffs from the sea — runs from Beer slipway in summer.
- Photography session — several local photographers run hen-party photo sessions on the beach. Cheesy but the results are usually properly excellent.
- Wreath-making, willow-weaving, pottery workshops — various local makers run private group workshops in the surrounding villages. Email us for recommendations.
Practical logistics
- Getting there. The closest mainline station is Honiton (9 miles), with direct trains from London Waterloo (around 3 hours). Pre-book a minibus or large taxi for the last 9 miles. Drivers usually need ~1 hour notice. By car, Hole Mill is 4 hours from London on a good run.
- Parking. Eight-plus spaces on site, including an EV charger.
- Food shopping. The big Tesco and Co-op are in Sidmouth (15 minutes). For something nicer, the Sidmouth deli on Old Fore Street has good charcuterie, cheese and wine. Allow 90 minutes the first afternoon for a proper food shop.
- Drinks. Bring more than you think. There is no late-night off-licence within 15 minutes' drive; if you run out at 11 pm, you are out. We recommend over-buying by at least 20%.
- Bedding. All beds made up; towels provided.
- The bride's room. We can arrange the master bedroom (the largest, with the best bath) to be the bride's room, with flowers, a card, and a small treat on arrival, with a few weeks' notice.
Cost per head
A two-night hen weekend at Hole Mill for 12, done well, typically costs £180-£250 per person, including accommodation, two evening meals, lunch out, breakfasts and drinks. Significantly cheaper than the equivalent in Bath or the Cotswolds, and substantially better-located for activities.
Booking tips
- Book at least 9-12 months ahead for spring and summer weekends. Hole Mill is small and books up early for hen-party slots.
- Friday-Sunday or Sunday-Tuesday are the standard hen-party slots. Sunday-Tuesday is significantly quieter and somewhat cheaper.
- Off-season weekends (October-March, excluding Christmas and New Year) are an underrated hen-party time. The hot tub and sauna are at their best in winter.
- Have a single decision-maker. This is the single most important piece of practical advice. One person should book, manage the deposit, organise food, and handle the rest of the group's communications. Ten-way decision-making is a slow road to chaos.
A hen weekend at Hole Mill is one of the more reliably enjoyable things we host. The combination of privacy, scale, hot tub, beach and coast path is genuinely well-suited to a group of 10-12. Check our availability for your dates and get in touch if you want suggestions for chefs, yoga teachers or activities.
